At the turn of the century, the main mode of winter transportation was by horse drawn sleigh or "cutter", as is depicted here. The scene is typical of many communities in Eastern Canada and the North Eastern United States. It is dawn on Christmas morning, and people are gathering at the church for an early Christmas service.
The couple in the sleigh are dressed in their finest clothing, bundled up against the cold. The horse is a large hackney horse, a breed that is used for driving and lift their feet smartly and carry their heads and tails high, trotting smartly over the snow.
The Thousand Islands region of Ontario, Canada, was the perfect backdrop for a childhood filled with adventure for Richard De Wolfe, an artist who still identifies strongly with rural life. The forests, fields, and of course the mighty St. Lawrence River, made the wonders of nature come alive for him. The art of Richard De Wolfe has been very popular ever since his first one-man show at the age of eighteen. That show was a sell out, supplying him with commissions for many months after.
