Artist's Description

This is a Noble German Warmblood gelding. His registered name was Monarch, although we called him Archie around the barn. He was my wife's dressage horse and together they competed nationally up to the Prix St. George level before Archie was retired from competition. His long, floppy ears were very distinctive and horses like him are said to have lop ears. He was a very powerful horse with a strong constitution and he lived to be thirty years old, when he passed away due to old age.

The Thousand Islands region of Ontario, Canada, was the perfect backdrop for a childhood filled with adventure for Richard De Wolfe, an artist who still identifies strongly with rural life. The forests, fields, and of course the mighty St. Lawrence River, made the wonders of nature come alive for him. The art of Richard De Wolfe has been very popular ever since his first one-man show at the age of eighteen. That show was a sell out, supplying him with commissions for many months after.
