This painting was commissioned by Norm Ritchie. It is a loose interpretation of his family farm, which was sold over forty years before this painting was made. It suggests a typical work day when his father was still farming with a team of Clydesdale horses, bringing in a load of loose-stacked hay to store in the loft of the barn. The two dogs were an important part of the family, and Norm remembers them fondly.
The Thousand Islands region of Ontario, Canada, was the perfect backdrop for a childhood filled with adventure for Richard De Wolfe, an artist who still identifies strongly with rural life. The forests, fields, and of course the mighty St. Lawrence River, made the wonders of nature come alive for him. The art of Richard De Wolfe has been very popular ever since his first one-man show at the age of eighteen. That show was a sell out, supplying him with commissions for many months after. Thanks Kristen. The idea of making a book to tell your grandchildren about the lives of their great grandparents is a wonderful idea. I would be happy to allow you to use the image of 'Heading for the Loft' to illustrate the story, provided it is for non-commercial use. Send me an email at info@richarddewolfe.com and tell me how large the image will be and I can send you a file to use.

I am doing a book for my Grandchildren about my parents. There is a story of my mom as a young girl on the hey wagon. When her dad threw some hay up there was a snake and she gave her dad a good laugh because she got down so quickly. Could I use your picture in my book? I am just publishing it through one of those photo book companies. Pictures make stories come to life. You are very talented! I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Richard. My parents put up hay with their horses for several years before they could afford a John Deere tractor. This was in the 1940s and the world was still under severe rationing because of WWII. Dad's horses were named Dynamite and Sparkplug :-D. This is beautiful.
