Description
I love to paint these old bank barns, with their hand hewn beams, weathered siding and rusty metal roofs. The ramp gave easy access to the large hay loft which sat on a stone foundation and housed the livestock below. Many of these barns were built more than one hundred years ago by groups of neighbours. These projects were referred to as "barn raising bees" and helped form a strong sense of community across rural North America. Men and boys would labour all day long on the structure while the women cared for the small children and prepared food and drink for everyone. It is sad to see these fine old monuments to country life slowly disappearing from the landscape.
